With the implementation of barrier measures to combat the spread of the coronavirus, contactless payment has boomed. The spending limit on contactless card payments is to rise from € 30 to € 50 in France.
This decision comes as a result of the work done by the Ministry of the Economy and Finance and the GIE Cartes Bancaires. The measure reduces the risk of spreading the coronavirus as it will allow citizens to pay without handling banknotes and without touching the card machine when purchasing larger quantities at more than a million payment terminals across France starting from May 11th 2020.
This development contributes to the efforts to strengthen health security in the retail trade and will thus facilitate a rapid resumption of activity in this sector.
It constitutes a new stage in the modernization of means of payment policy initiated by the Government within the framework of the National Strategy on payment methods in France.
