GERMANY: TSE Certification Process and Certified Solutions

Starting January 1st cash registers in Germany must be equipped with a technical security device. Technical security device – TSE is made up of three components: a security module, a storage medium, and a digital interface.

The TSE must be certified, which is the responsibility of manufacturers. Certification of the actual point of sale system or POS application is not necessary.

The BSI (Federal Office for Information Security) specifies technical requirements that have to be fulfilled in order to obtain certificate. Process itself is very complex and lasts approximately six to nine months.

Currently, certified providers of technical security device solution are Epson, Diebold Nixdorf and Swissbit with their hardware solutions pre-certified in accordance with technical guideline TR-03153.

In regard to cloud-based technical security device, at this moment, there are no certified solutions. TSE from Fiskaly is currently in evaluation.
